The History of the Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2

The Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 debuted at the end of the 1985 WRC season as the most extreme evolution of the rally-spec Quattro. The car was designed to compete in the legendary Group B, an era that symbolized the most spectacular—and dangerous—period in the history of world rallying.

Powerful aerodynamics, massive spoilers, a widened body and an advanced quattro drivetrain made the S1 E2 a true monster of the special stages. The car commanded respect not only for its performance but also for its brutal character and the unmistakable sound of its five-cylinder engine.

Although Audi had to compete against modern designs—such as the Peugeot 205 T16 Evo 2 and the Lancia Delta S4—the vehicle quickly became a WRC icon. It achieved its greatest success during the 1985 San Remo Rally, where its crew secured a spectacular victory.

However, it was never destined to become a true champion.

Following the tragic accidents that occurred during Group B races, the FIA disbanded the series in 1986. Audi withdrew from the World Rally Championship, and the S1 E2 went down in history forever as one of the wildest and most iconic rally cars of all time.
