If you’re starting to collect COBI models, you’ll quickly notice scale markings such as 1:12, 1:35, 1:48 or 1:300. Scale determines the size of a model in relation to the real-life machine and affects its dimensions, level of detail and the amount of space needed to display it.
What Does Model Scale Mean?
Scale defines the ratio between the size of a model and its real-life counterpart. For example, 1:35 means that the model is approximately 35 times smaller than the actual vehicle.
The rule is simple: the smaller the number after “1:”, the larger the model.
That’s why a 1:12 model will be significantly larger than a 1:35 or 1:72 model. However, this doesn’t mean that a larger scale is better – each scale suits a different style of building and collecting.
The Most Popular COBI Model Scales
COBI uses different scales depending on the type of machine being recreated – from large collector’s models to compact builds that allow you to fit an entire collection on a single shelf.
1:12 Scale – Maximum Detail
One of the largest scales used by COBI. It allows for detailed recreations of interiors, engines and moving parts, resulting in truly impressive display models.
This scale was used for the Tiger II Königstiger 1:12 scale tank: set #2808, the largest and most complex model in COBI’s history, consisting of more than 11,000 pieces.
1:28 Scale – Detailed Armored Vehicle Models
This scale is characteristic of larger tank models, including those from World War II. It provides plenty of room for historical details, interior construction and functional elements.
1:32 Scale – Aviation on a Larger Scale
Used for selected aircraft models. The larger size allows for a more detailed recreation of the aircraft’s silhouette, cockpit, landing gear and armament.
1:35 Scale – A Versatile Choice
One of COBI’s most versatile scales, used for cars, military vehicles and more. It offers a great balance between detail and compact size, making 1:35 models an excellent choice for larger collections and dioramas as well.
1:48 Scale – Ideal for an Aircraft Collection
This scale preserves the aircraft’s distinctive silhouette and most important details while keeping the model relatively compact. That’s why it is frequently found in collections of aircraft and military vehicles.
1:72 Scale – More Models on One Shelf
The 1:72 scale is a great option for collectors who want to build a larger collection without taking up too much space. COBI uses this scale for both armored vehicle models and selected aircraft.
How to Choose the Right COBI Model Scale
Your choice depends primarily on how you want to build your collection. Want a large display model? Explore larger scales such as 1:12, 1:28 or 1:32. Want to combine detail with a manageable size? 1:35 or 1:48 can be a great choice. Want to fit multiple models on a single shelf? Consider 1:72 or, in the case of ships, scales such as 1:700. And remember you don’t have to limit your entire collection to just one scale.
Do COBI Models in the Same Scale Match Each Other?
Yes. If two real-life vehicles are recreated in the same scale, their proportions relative to each other will be similar to those of the actual vehicles.
This means models in the same scale can be displayed side by side, used to create collections and dioramas and compared to show the relative sizes of the real machines.
